3 Idiots Box Office Collection - 3 Idiots creates Box Office History!

Amir Khan Starrer "3 Idiots" has smashed all previous records. The Week 1 [incl. Thursday previews] totals to an astonishing, earth-shattering Rs. 80 crores net. Reliance BIG Entertainment, distributor of the film, released about 2,000 prints across 40 countries. Has crossed the lifetime net collections of all films, except ‘Ghajini’ [Rs. 115 cr.] and ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ [Rs. 85 cr.].

Reliance Big Pictures which released ‘3 Idiot’s in 2126 screens worldwide including 366 screens overseas – the widest release for any Indian film so far – has reported unprecedented box-office response from all over. The film has set new records in ticket sales in towns and cities across the world. In just 4 days the film has grossed over an astounding Rs 100 crores worldwide. The film continues to draw record crowds and is setting new benchmarks for Bollywood films.

Inspired from Chetan Bhagat’s novel, ‘Five Point Someone’ the film chronicles the tale of three friends together in an engineering college. What seem to have touched the right chord in people’s heart is the witty writing and terrific acting and the incisive look which the film takes at the education system in India. The screenplay is impressively done, with the credits going to Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Shot on location the film has caught the audience’s imagination like never before, thanks to the cinematographer C.R. Muraleedharan. From a small town like Wardha to a city like Chandigarh, from Mumbai to Delhi and from New York to Sydney theatres have reported record-breaking collections. The film which has also been critically acclaimed has already begun attracting repeat audiences. Said a college student coming out of a suburban multiplex in Ahmedabad that she was coming back again tomorrow with her family to watch the film.

Commenting on the huge success of the film Producer Vinod Chopra said, “Response has been overwhelming from all over the world. Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier on that people liked the film but this is something else… We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced ‘Avatar’ shows and increased ours.”

“3 Idiots is the highest grossing Hindi film ever in Australia on its opening weekend. Similarly in the US, I have been given to understand that ‘3 Idiots’ would be highest ever for a Hindi film,” he added.

Film Information, an Indian trade journal that tracks box office performance commented “Bollywood should be dancing, singing, rejoicing, shedding tears of joy… 3 Idiots has come like a tornado to smash box-office records and create new ones which may not be broken easily, at least in the immediate future.”

'3 Idiots' breaks ‘Ghajini’ records

Film makes Rs.93 crore in opening weekend

Aamir Khan starrer comedy-drama "3 Idiots" created a record by earning around Rs.93 crore (Rs.930 million/$20 million) in its opening weekend. Reliance BIG Entertainment, which is the distributor of "3 Idiots", released the movie with about 2,000 prints across 40 countries.

Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's bestseller "Five Point Someone", the film has been produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajkumar Hirani.

"Response has been overwhelming from all over the world. Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier on that people liked the film but this is something else? We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced 'Avatar' shows and increased ours," said Chopra in a statement.

Released on Dec 25, its box office collection has beaten the initial earnings of another Aamir starrer "Ghajini", considered Hindi cinema's highest grosser till date, with 30 percent more earnings till Sunday night.

"'3 Idiots' is the highest grossing Hindi film ever in Australia on its opening weekend. Similarly in the US, I have been given to understand that '3 Idiots' would be highest ever for a Hindi film," he added.

The paid previews of the movie also garnered over Rs.9 crore worldwide, above those of the paid preview collections of "Ghajini" that was Rs.7 crore globally.

It also stars R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani and Kareena Kapoor in pivotal roles.

Bollywood's Generation X remembers Michael Jackson

Majority of them have been known for their dance moves. And most of them have been inspired by the 'King of Pop'. Generation X remembers Michael Jackson as he takes a journey to the heavenly abode.

Hurman Baweja - "I can't believe he is no more. It's too much of a shock. I was looking forward to seeing him on stage in London in August. For me he will always be alive. I have seen him live on stage before, I hear him practically everyday either in my car or on my iPod. He is my dancing Guru whom I have watched and learnt from. He is a genius. Here is to a Legend. May his soul rest in peace! He will be missed!"

Celina Jaitly - "It's shocking. I was planning to go for his last concert to London. I have been a die hard fan and I still can't believe that he is gone."

Neha Dhupia - "I am sad beyond belief. It's the biggest loss ever for the world of music and entertainment. There will never be anyone else like him."

Eesha Koppikhar - "You created history with your music. I will always remember you as the 'King of Pop'. As rightly stated by all the news channels, 25th June will always be remembered as a black day in the world of music."

Mugdha Godse - "Words fail to express my feelings. I still can't believe the news."

You have built a bridge among family, friends and cultures though your music and dance. You are a legend among the greats. God bless you always and forever. We will always love and miss you."

Priyanka Kothari - "It's hard to believe that he is no more. I am feeling so depressed ever since I heard this sad news. Michael's music and dance will never die."

Payal Rohatgi - "I consider Michael's sad demise as a great loss to the music lovers like me. He was truly the 'king of pop' and dying at an age of 50 is very shocking. I hope his soul rests in peace. We shall always remember his blockbuster hit 'Thriller'!"

Madhavan - "Oh God, it's hard to believe. It's the end of an era; beginning of immortality!"

Sanjay Suri - "It's sad to know that the 'King of Pop' is no more. He is the man who started it all. He ruled the 80s and the 90s and raised the bar through his great LIVE shows, amazing pop music and videos. It's sad to know that the world's greatest entertainer is no more. He surely will be missed."

Udita Goswami - "May his soul rest in peace. He wasn't the icon he used to be anymore after all the mess he got into. He was still trying to get out of it though. Maybe this was the time. His music will always be missed. And yes, there won't be another Michael Jackson ever!"

Chitrangda Singh - "I am surprisingly much more affected than I thought I could be by the demise of a star. I am crying in my heart. It's all the memories he has given us. He was a rare genius. Wish we could save him!"

Adhyayan Suman - "The 'King of Pop' is no more but nobody will ever be able to replace Michael Jackson. He was the best. May his soul rest in peace!"

I don't gamble, says Amitabh Bachchan

A bevy of Bollywood stars attending the ongoing International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) event is loving Macau for the one thing it can't do in India officially - gambling.

Whether it is blackjack, roulette, poker or even just slot machines, actors and filmmakers are betting sums of money on the playing tables.

While actors like Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Riteish Deshmukh have already hit the casinos, others like Amitabh Bachchan and Javed Akhtar preferred to stay away from the stalls at the lavish Venetian Macau-Resort. Australian singer Peter Andre also stayed away.

Genelia D'Souza and Ashutosh Gowariker who arrived on Thursday are waiting to try their luck.

Some roulette sound bytes of the stars:

Amitabh Bachchan: I don't gamble.

Lara Dutta: I played a little bit last night. Riteish (Deshmukh) taught me how to gamble - that is going to come handy for both of us later, but it's fun and exciting. I even won though I don't usually gamble because I don't know how to play.

Peter Andre: I don't know if I will play at the casino or not. Actually my dad doesn't like it.

Genelia D'Souza: I am definitely going to be visiting the casinos here... Life is all about fun. I don't know how to play at the casino, but I am hoping to take some tips from here.

R. Madhavan: We go there (casinos) and pay our dues. I am not very good at it. I just play on slot machines and hope I hit the jackpot - that's all.

Neil Nitin Mukesh: No casinos for me.

Javed Akhtar: I have more interest in going to see the old churches - they are very beautiful. Today I saw very old churches - almost 400 years old - they were lovely.

Sushmita Sen: I will hopefully try my luck at the casino a little bit because I suppose this place (Venetian Macau-Resort) has the world's largest casino.

Kabir Bedi: I play poker and I don't find many places in the world where I can play it in a lovely atmosphere. So when I am here, I am sure I will play. I usually win some, lose some, but I don't play by the extremes.

Ashutosh Gowariker: I want to go to the casinos. I want to go there with 1,000 dollars and probably end up with 10,000 dollars by the end of the night.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: I am not so lucky in gambling - so I don't really know, but I guess I must check it out.

Randhir Kapoor: I think I will go to the casinos here. Please wish me luck.

David Dhawan: I did go to the casino yesterday and I lost. But no worries. Tonight I will recover it all.
